Notable Facts:
- The Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands.
- It has a population of over 90 million people, the 12th largest in the world.

- However like many countries the wealthy receive most of the benefits as the rich are becoming richer and the poor are becoming poorer. The Philippines is the 40th most unequal country in the world (CIA).
- The Philippines had the most number of natural disasters in the world in 2009 (Citizens Disaster Response Center). • Roughly 37% of the population are 14 years old or younger. By comparison 18% of the UK population are 14 years old or younger. One in twenty people are above 60 years old in the Philippines while more than 1 in 6 are over 65 years old in the UK (other sources).
- It is estimated there are 1.5 million street children in the Philippines, children who live, work and sleep on the streets (Situation of the Youth in the Philippines
- An estimated 45% of people live below the poverty line of $2 a day. How the World Bank has estimated these statistics has often been criticised as underestimating the poverty in many countries, particularly in Asia, meaning that it may be even higher.
- The Philippine economy (GDP) is estimated to be worth $370 billion when adjusted for exchange rates and the price of goods (purchasing power parity). This makes the Philippines the 31st biggest economy in the world.
